Laura Cerwinske's wide-ranging body of visual art work derives from and comments on the history of art. Her earliest work explored the portrait and decorative traditions of early Christian and medieval illuminated manuscripts. In a later series of "miniatures" she created self-portraits that project the langour of the portraits of Gustave Klimpt. More recent endeavors are wall-size fine-art-and-graphic collages and this series of prints taken from a book of miniature gouache portraits.

The faces in this series are drawn from sources as diverse as Mexican "retratos," images by Picasso, Alice Neel, and Saul Steinberg, cartoon wall art, photographic portraiture, and pure imagination.
